SUPPORT LIVING HISTORY

The Situation

As of August 2024, the population of the Pitcairn Islands in the South Pacific is 40.

This makes it the smallest population of any British Overseas Territory.

The island is small and remote, measuring only 2 miles long and 1 mile wide, without an airstrip. Travel is limited to a supply ship and the fare is extremely expensive which restricts regular travel. The children go to high school and beyond in New Zealand and most do not come back, hence the population has declined and is aging.

The island needs younger workers for sustainability, but there are currently no job advertisements to attract immigrants.  Project Pitcairn wants to run programmes and projects to stimulate economic growth and provide jobs to attract young people to the island to make it sustainable again.

Our Projects

Improve Digital Connectivity

In 2022, Pitcairn’s internet service deteriorated to the point where, by early 2023, locals were without internet and phone connectivity for 3 months. Since February 2024, Starlink was made available to every home on Pitcairn. This allows digital nomads to work from Adamstown if they so desire

Provide Affordable Housing for Volunteers

Recognizing the importance of providing affordable accommodation, we have launched a project to renovate the existing ancestral house of Jacqui Christian, specifically to house volunteers and/or new immigrants. Jacqui has the materials but labour is needed to complete the building. Other accommodation projects will follow to house volunteers and immigrants

Promote Sustainable Economic Development

All residents of Pitcairn work for the government. Project Pitcairn aims to develop the private sector by creating new industries and develop existing businesses as a means of providing jobs for locals and immigrants. The project is currently supporting local coffee growers through providing various resources and a guaranteed market. Project Pitcairn has already encouraged two young local men to return to Pitcairn.
